Ovarian reserve tests include blood tests and ultrasound.
The ultrasound measures the number of AFC (Antral Follicle Count) in the uterus.
Blood tests measure AMH levels and perform ovarian reserve testing.
AMH is a hormone that is secreted by the follicle in the developmental process, and is thought as to be an indicator to know the ovarian reserve function of women.
AMH is secreted from the pre-antral follicles, and the measurement value and the number of developed follicles are correlated.
Therefore by measuring the concentration of AMH, we can estimate the ovarian age and measure the number of follicles remaining.
The Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) to promote follicular maturation is also a hormone which is an indicator of the ovarian reserve function.
Although it is shown to lower and increase the ovarian function, because it varies greatly depending on the menstrual cycle, it is hard to accurately predict the ovarian age from the value of FSH.
Therefore the measurement of AMH is thought as to be the most quickest and accurate test that can detect the decrease in the ovarian reserve function.
